Barn Owl Aurora 1

“Aurora”

Barn Owl
Tyto alba

VINS adopted Aurora from a captive breeding program in East Aurora, New York, when he was just a few weeks old.  Our staff spent as much time as possible with him from the start, so that he would become comfortable around people and unfamiliar situations.  Today, Aurora is fully glove-trained and a crucial part of VINS educational programs, both at our nature center and throughout the local area.
Aurora is an energetic bird with a playful attitude.  While perched on the glove, he often stretches and flaps his wings, showing off their gorgeous colors.  He sometimes chitters charmingly, especially when he sees his handlers.  Always observant, Aurora is often the first to notice a chipmunk scurrying across our outdoor stage.  He is not terribly fond of children—but the feeling is definitely not mutual!  People of all ages love the opportunity for a close-up encounter with an owl species that isn’t commonly seen in Vermont.
The Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation ensures that our education birds stay healthy with two complete health checks per year.  Aurora strongly dislikes these exams, especially when we trim his long talons!
