Bald Eagle Elmwood 1

“Elmwood”

Bald Eagle
Haliaeetus leucocephalus

When Elmwood was less than a year old, she was found with a partially amputated wing.  She was missing the tip of her right wing and no one is sure why.  She was treated at the Raptor Recovery Center in Elmwood, Nebraska, where she was declared unable to fly.
In 2000, Elmwood arrived at VINS with a brown head and brown tail.  Gradually, over the next couple of years, she gained the white adult plumage of her majestic species.  Both of our bald eagles often perch near the front of their enclosure, giving visitors a stunning view.  When they perch close together, Elmwood appears slightly larger than our male, Lafayette.
The Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation ensures that all exhibit birds have comfortable living quarters and biannual health checks.  Elmwood is not a fan of these exams and can be quite a handful for our rehabilitators!  Both eagles receive a variety of nutritious foods, including fish, rabbit, and chicken.  They also get occasional chicken wings or rabbit heads as “treats!”
