Fairchance & West Virginia

Eastern Screech Owls
Megascops asio

Fairchance and West Virginia were transferred to VINS together from the Avian Conservation Foundation of Appalachia in Morgantown, WV. West Virginia had been there since 2018 and was joined by Fairchance in 2019. Both birds had been injured from suspected vehicle collisions and rescued, but ultimately, were unable to fly well enough for release.

These to eastern screech owls represent the two color variations of the species: Fairchance is a red-morph, and West Virginia is a gray-morph, the more common phenotype. They are most commonly spotted sitting close together in their enclosure. Their feather colors and patterns allow them to camouflage expertly against branches and tree bark, and they sit very still during the day, so they are tricky to spot!
