Los Angeles
Black Vulture
Coragyps atratus
As her name suggests, Los Angeles, the Black Vulture, came to VINS by way of California. She was transferred from a rehabilitation center that had been caring for her. Los Angeles had suffered from severe glaucoma, the result of an unknown trauma in the wild, and had her right eye surgically removed, leaving her unable to be released back to the wild. The rehabilitator who had been caring for her sought out an appropriate permanent home for Los Angeles, and found VINS.
Black Vultures are native to southern North America, but recent climate shifts have expanded their range northward, with sightings of wild black vultures in Vermont in recent years. In addition to her missing right eye, Los Angeles has limited vision in her remaining left eye, and therefore VINS educators and trainers have had to get creative with her training, using sound, bright colors and her favorite food, chicken. As a member of VINS’ bird ambassador team, Los Angeles helps to educate the public about the important role that vultures play in their ecosystems.
