Montgomery

American Kestrel
Falco sparverius

Montgomery came to VINS in 2014 after being rescued in the northernmost part of Vermont, almost in Canada. He was most likely hit by a car several days earlier. Montgomery had a fractured humerus bone in his left wing and damage to his left eye from the trauma. After being unable to hunt for some time, he had also started to suffer from starvation. VINS rehabbers treated his condition, but his injuries left lasting damage.

Kestrels are small falcons that feed on a variety of insects, often catching them in flight, yet this means they must migrate south from Vermont winters to feed. Montgomery sustained an injury to his left wing making him unable to hunt on the wing, so now he is fed his insect meal by VINS volunteers and basks in the warmth of a heat lamp on chilly days.
