Quechee
Blue Jay
Cyanocitta cristata
Quechee arrived at VINS in August of 2020 as a rehabilitation patient. Although he was uninjured, he was found landing on people, and it was clear he had been imprinted on humans.
He was likely found as a young nestling and raised illegally and incorrectly, becoming imprinted while growing up around people. He must have been released or escaped before being caught again and brought to VINS.
Imprinted birds are considered unreleasable, since their abnormal behavior can cause issues and increased risks around humans, and even cause aggression from their own species.
Quechee is a very inquisitive and intelligent bird. His comfort around humans allows us to see behaviors we might not see in a wild raised Blue Jay. Although a great ambassador for his species, Quechee is also a perfect example of one of the many reasons wild birds should only be raised by licensed rehabilitators, who can provide the care and environment for them to successfully be released back into the wild.
