Sullivan

Great Horned Owl
Bubo virginianus

Sullivan is named for Sullivan County, New Hampshire where she was rescued in 2017 and brought to VINS. She was found on the ground, unable to fly, a victim of an unknown trauma. Upon her intake examination at the Center for Wild Bird Rehabilitation, Sullivan was diagnosed with a fracture in her left shoulder, and this was confirmed by x-rays. After treatment, when her injury healed, Sullivan still had restricted use of her left wing, and therefore was not able to fly well enough for release back to the wild.

In the summer of 2017, Sullivan was placed on exhibit at VINS as a bird ambassador. Despite her limited flight ability, she was able to get around her new enclosure quite well, and almost immediately made her way up to one of the highest branches in the exhibit. That is still her favorite spot to perch, and she can usually be spotted there looking down from above.
